Britain and America have concluded a important commercial pact that will keep no import taxes on UK medicine shipments entering the American market.

Agreement Details of the Pact

As part of the deal, the UK has committed to increase expenditure on drugs through the public health system. This commitment ensures that import taxes on these crucial products will be held at zero for a period of 36 months.

This development follows previous statements to significantly raise import taxes on branded pharmaceutical imports, with increases discussed as high as 100%.

"This agreement with the UK strengthens the worldwide climate for new treatments and introduces much-needed equity to transatlantic pharmaceutical trade," a statement noted.

Economic Significance

Drugs are one of the Britain's biggest exports to the America, which is by far the largest buyer for leading UK drugmakers.

Trade data indicate that in the 12 months leading up to the third quarter, the UK exported medicines totaling £11.1bn to the US. This figure represented nearly one-fifth of total UK exports in that timeframe.

"This guarantee safeguards work, stimulates capital expenditure and facilitates the UK to establish itself as a international leader for life sciences," a government official remarked.

Specific British Pledges

The pact entails several specific pledges from the British government:

  • Price Threshold Increase: The UK will lift the price threshold at which it considers new treatments to be too expensive by a quarter.
  • Higher Drug Budget: There is a target to increase overall public funding on drugs from 0.3% of the national economy to 0.6 percent over the next decade.
  • Rebate Cap: The percentage drug companies must pay back to the NHS to stay within budget will be capped at 15%. Previously, repayments exceeded twenty percent.

Broader Context

The deal comes amid a protracted row between the pharmaceutical industry and the UK government over medicine costs and approval rates.

This friction were intensified by assertions that US customers were charged significantly more for the identical medicines than consumers in the other developed nations.

Recently, several large drug company projects in the UK have been halted or scrapped, while major expansions have been directed toward US facilities.

The Science Minister stated that the NHS needed to spend more on treatments, noting that its expenditure on drugs had shrunk as a proportion of its overall budget over the last ten years.
