Federal authorities have entered the fray in a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to block the California's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This court case, submitted to a US district court, targets the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme represents a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and undermines the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will survive legal scrutiny.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.

The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in violation of the federal constitution.
