Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in multiple conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, after Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

This means, the home team require four wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three Tests.

A loss will extend England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term future in the side, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, the opener said any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
